Google Releases A Notebook !

Its not for sale, an we do not expect it to be for awhile. Google is offering it CR-48 notebook powered by its Chrome OS under a pilot program. 

The notebook is a 12.1" notebook which weighs in at 3.8 pounds. Connectivity is via WiFi and 3G. From the pictures, there is no provision for connecting via LAN (that is something they should have taken out from laptops a long long time ago). Battery life is 8 hours. Other than that, we really do not know much more about it.

The only way you can get one is to sign up for their pilot (i.e. beta test) program. If you want to apply for one you can apply through this link: TEST DRIVE A CHROME NOTEBOOK. 

I gave it a shot, and asked for three notebooks for our small business. Doubt we will be selected, but it never hurts to try.

Personal Experience
Nice little projector, very good image quality in film (when correctly adjusted), somewhat less impressive sharpness in interpolated graphics. Colors look very good, even if not always accurate. Impressive for its price range. Long lamp life, bright enough also in eco mode. Useful "brilliant color" adjustment. Light and portable.

Problems
Fan noise in full power mode - though the eco mode is enough in 90% of cases. Some luma/chroma flickering when displaying images very close to white. When not in use, on ceiling mount and in a dark room, the flashing blue standby light can be disturbing - a small piece of tape will fix it.

The good: The Acer Aspire AM3970-U5022 has an attractive design for a budget PC, and bears a fair price tag for its configuration.

Razer Abyssus Mirror

The Razer Abyssus Mirror ($49.99 direct) is a mouse with a fetching design, but what flaunts in appearance it lacks in terms of utility. Sporting a gloss finish, comfortable grip, and sleek blue light on its tail, the Abyssus Mirror brings a woefully basic feature set to the table compared with its competitors in the entry-level gaming mouse category. While its performance on the gaming grid is up to par in terms of mouse sensitivity (up to 3500dpi switching as well as 1000Hz polling rate), this mouse's unique features end there.

Design and Features
If there's one thing that Razer does consistently well, it is hardware design. The 4.5-inch Abyssus Mirror is essentially an updated version of the preexisting Abyssus; the only difference between the two is the Abyssus Mirror's black gloss finish, which hurts its appeal due to some awful smudging. Fortunately, the Mirror retains its predecessor's incredible comfort, ergonomics and ambidextrous shape.

Aside from switchable dpi (between 450, 1,800 and 3,500) and polling rate (125Hz to 1000Hz), or how often the mouse reports its position to the computer per second, the plug-and-play Abyssus Mirror has absolutely no unique features. While in other situations, this reasoning has been to maintain a certain price point, I was concerned to see Razer omitted a horizontal scroll option. General-use mice for around the same price, like the Anywhere Mouse MX, provide this option. It's not a deal-breaker, but for what you're paying there should be more options.

Performance
With switchable dpi and polling rate, the Abyssus Mirror delivers when it comes to power for the price. It is more than usable on a bare desk, arm rest, and even denim. However, if Razer were looking to craft a mouse that was truly no-nonsense, it should have done away with the glitzy tail light and gone for something even simpler and faster.

What the Abyssus Mirror does well is in its comfort and design. However, all of that elegance goes down the tubes once you smudge up the gloss finish. If what you want out of your mouse is brilliant ergonomics and a sexy sheen for less than what the top guns go for, then look no further. With competitors like SteelSeries' Kinzu ($34.99 direct) offering nearly the same power, more features, and simpler design at nearly half the price, the Abyssus Mirror's back-to-basics philosophy is a tough sell.

Pros

Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570

Yesterday we found the 3.5-inch Google Android Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 at a retailer for Php14,700.

Sony Vaio VPCYB15AG versus HP Pavilion DM1-3016AU

The two least expensive options on our list were the Sony Vaio VPCYB15AG and HP Pavilion DM1-3016AU. We thought we would do a head to head.

Sony Vaio YB

Where the two are identical. Both the Sony Vaio VPCYB15AG and HP Pavilion DM1-3016AU are 11.6-inch ultraportable laptops with a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution screen. Both are powered by AMD's 1.6 GHz dual core E-350 processor. Both come with 2GB's of RAM and 320 SATA hard disk drive for storage. For connectivity, both have 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, 2.1 + EDR Bluetooth, USB 2.0 ports and HDMI out.

As you can see, essentially, these two laptops are nearly identical. Lets looks at what distinguishes them.

1. Price. The Sony Vaio YB is offered at a suggested retail price of Php29,999, and at this price you can pay for over 12 monthly installment. If you pay in cash or do a straight payment through a credit card, you can get it for Php26,999. The HP Pavillion DM1 is offered at a suggested retail price of Php22,990, and at this price you can pay for over 12 monthly installment. If you pay in cash or do a straight payment through a credit card, you can get it for Php20,999.

Depending on how you pay for it, the HP Pavillion DM1 is a 6-7K cheaper.

2. Battery life and endurance. The HP Pavillion DM1 comes with a 6-cell 4400 mAh battery. The Sony Vaio YB comes with a 4-cell 3500 mAh battery. Having identical innards, it is no trick guessing that the HP Pavillon DM1 wins this round. According toLaptopmag, the HP Pavillion DM1 has 6.5 hours of battery life, while the Sony Vaio YB will provide a tab under 5 hours.

3. Graphics performance. While both units have AMD Radeon HD Graphics cards, the Sony Vaio has 384MB of dedicated video memory while the HP Pavillion DM1 relies on shared memory. Laptopmag in its review of the Sony Vaio YB said:

While we wouldn't recommend the VAIO YB as a gaming machine, it's capable of playing World of Warcraft. With the special effects turned down, the VAIO YB managed a strong 29 fps, a bit below the ultraportable category average but much stronger than the Lenovo ThinkPad X120e (21 fps) and the HP Pavilion dm1z (24 fps).

4. Size and weight. The Sony Vaio YB dimensions are 8 x 11.4 x 1.2 inches and it weighs in a 3.2 pounds. The HP Pavillion DM1 dimensions are 8.4 x 11.4 x 1.2 inches and it weighs in a 3.4 pounds. The Vaio weighs less, but only because it has a smaller battery. We will call it a draw.

Winner - None

5. Operating system. We would have preferred Windows 7 Home Premium, but neither comes with that. The Sony Vaio YB comes with Windows 7 Starter while the HP Pavillion DM1 come with Windows 7 Home Basic.

Winner - HP

In the end, the HP Pavillion DM1 is the better choice, trading some graphics power for longer battery at a lower cost. Objectively, that is what I would recommend and it is the clear winner in this head-to-head.

Subjectively, the HP Pavillion DM1 does not look and feel like an HP Pavillion. It looks like a large HP netbook. The Sony Vaio YB feels and looks like a Vaio. For my money, I would splurge a bit and get the Sony Vaio YB.

After visiting Sony’s headquarters in Japan in the early 1980s, Jobs had realized that uniforms would not only develop a signature style for the company, they would also bond workers to their work environment.

However, that didn't quite pan out as Steve had planned:

“Sony, with its appreciation for style, had gotten the famous designer Issey Miyake to create its uniform,” writes Isaacson. “It was a jacket made of rip-stop nylon with sleeves that could unzip to make it a vest. So Jobs called Issey Miyake and asked him to design a vest for Apple, Jobs recalled, ‘I came back with some samples and told everyone it would great if we would all wear these vests. Oh man, did I get booed off the stage. Everybody hated the idea’.”

So Jobs put to rest his plans to have everyone dressed the same at Apple.

But he didn’t give up his plans to develop a signature style for the company. So what he did was he created the uniform for himself. Isaacson continues:

“In the process, however, he became friends with Miyake and would visit him regularly. He also came to like the idea of having a uniform for himself, both because of its daily convenience (the rationale he claimed) and its ability to convey a signature style. ‘So I asked Issey to make me some of his black turtlenecks that I liked, and he made me like a hundred of them’. Jobs noticed my surprise when he told this story, so he showed them stacked up in the closet. ‘That's what I wear’, he said. "I have enough to last for the rest of my life’.”

Toshiba NB305/009

In the current market the combination of Windows 7 Starter, a 250GB hard drive, and an Intel Atom N450 should cost around $399.

For $499 the Toshiba Satellite NB305/009 is a functional but expensive older netbook. The main let down for current buyers is the processor; new netbooks that cost around $350 have one that's much faster than N450 in this one. However, if you can find it for half the RRP you're still getting a good deal.

Under the hood there's a Intel Atom N450 (1.66GHz) processor that can run Windows 7 Starter decently, and easily handles word processing and surfing the internet. Only basic casual games will run due to the combination of onboard graphics and 1GB of RAM, but that’s normal for a netbook.

A 250GB hard drive is as large as you can get in a netbook, but it should still be sufficient for most low-end computing tasks. A 10.1in (1,024x600 resolution) screen is standard for most netbooks, and is just big enough to make sure you can see what you’re doing. The NB305 weighs just 1.18kg, and measures 36.4mm thick, 192.3mm deep, and 266mm wide. There is a blue version of this netbook called the Toshiba NB305/01E which is otherwise completely identical.

iOS 5 Jailbreak Released

The infamous iPhone Dev Team has posted a download link for the latest Mac version of Redsn0w (Windows version in the works) which works against iOS 5, the newest mobile OS from Apple.

The Team informs on its blog that redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b5 to include the public URLs for the iOS 5 IPSW files for all supported devices.

“This way, first-time iOS5 jailbreakers don’t need to supply the IPSW file manually,” the Team writes.

The hackers confirm that redsn0w currently still provides a ‘tethered’ jailbreak, meaning users will have to always connect their handset to the jailbreak machine when a reboot is necessary. An iPhone 3GS model is the exception.

“It’s still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS, and it doesn’t apply to iPad2 or the upcoming iPhone4S,” the team writes, thus confirming which devices work with the jailbreak utility, and which don’t.

The tinkerers claim they’ve build some of PwnageTool’s functionality into Redsn0w, therefore they are holding off the release of a new PwnageTool version. The main reason is the ‘tethered’ nature of the hack.

According to their blog entry, “The new ‘Custom IPSW’ button on the Extras screen will create a custom IPSW without the baseband update for 4.3.3 or 5.0gm (iPhone3GS and iPhone4 only, for now).”

Jailbreakers are warned to avoid accidental restoration to the stock IPSW after creating the custom one.

The Team’s post ends with a promise to try and deliver normal compatibility for existing ultrasn0w unlockers and a fix to the iBooks issue on jailbroken iOS 5 devices.

iOS 5 is the biggest software update Apple ever released for its mobile OS containing over 200 new features and improvements, including a new Notification system, iMessage, Newsstand, a coll Reminders app, Twtter integration, Camera and Mail improvements, AirPlay mirroring and, of course, iCloud support, to name some of they key additions.

Samsung N150-JA02

This basic netbook is more expensive than the alternatives while also having worse overall specs.

For $429 the Samsung N150-JA02 is not a competitively priced netbook. Cheaper nerbooks from other manufacturers have much better specs, and while a discount to the tune of $180 would help the N150 become good value for money again it's still probably better to go with an alternative that has an Intel Atom N550 or AMD Fusion C-50.

What the N150 does have is an Intel Atom N450 (1.66GHz) processor that is reasonable enough for most simpler productivity applications. The 1GB of RAM and onboard graphics are pretty much standard for a netbook, so no complaints there at least.

A 250GB hard drive is small but is up to par with the plethora of otherwise better specced alternatives. The 10.1in (1,024x600 resolution) screen is also up to par, and at least the portability of the N150 is slightly better than average for a netbook. It weighs 1.24kg and measures 34.7mm thick, 188.5mm deep and 264mm wide.

HP Mini 110-3020TU

This rather old netbook now costs a lot more than newer HP netbooks, so unless you can find it for under half the RRP it's better to go with a newer HP.

The HP Mini 110-3020TU netbook for $499 is much more expensive than newer and directly better HP netbooks. Unless you can find it on discount for under half the RRP, it's a better idea to get any other modern netbook.

It has an Intel Atom N455 (1.66GHz) processor that does a good job running Windows 7 Starter, so while slow it’s still functional. The onboard graphics and 1GB of RAM limit you to casual games, but that’s the most you’ll find in a netbook.

The 250GB hard drive is more than enough for most netbook users. A 10.1in (1,024x600 resolution) screen is par for the course, and it should still be large enough to let you see what you’re doing. The 3020TU weighs 1.23kg, and measures 32.1mm thick, 194mm deep, and 268mm wide.

This is an average, notebook, with not a great deal to recommend it but on show-stopper downsides either.

ASUS Eee PC R101D

With the increased prevalence of Intel Atom N550s in sub-$400 netbooks, this Intel Atom N450 equipped netbook aren't as good value as they once were.

For $369 the ASUS Eee PC R101D is certainly cheap, but netbooks with better processors are now actually cheaper. The price needs to come down to about $250 before this netbook is a contender again in the value for money stakes.

What it does have is the now somewhat aged Intel Atom N455 (1.66GHz), a basic processor that’s fine for low-end productivity applications. Onboard graphics enable simple casual gaming, but netbooks aren’t generally known for being able to do much more than that.

Otherwise the specs are great for any netbook; there’s 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and a tiny but functional 10.1in (1,024x600 resolution) screen. Portability is also excellent, as the R101D weighs 1.27kg, and measures 36.5mm thick, 178mm deep, and 262mm wide.

This notebook is a little better than average so it's worth considering, but the manufacturer could have done better.

MSI Wind L1350D

Those that need a netbook on the cheap should strongly consider this one, because while low-end the price is far below average.

The MSI Wind L1350D is a low-end netbook, but since it costs only $249 that’s easily excused. It’s certainly powerful enough for productivity applications like Office, and at just 1.1kg it’s light even by the standards of netbook portability.

It uses an Intel Atom N455 (1.66GHz) processor which is fast enough for low-end productivity applications, and with 1GB of RAM the overall performance with Windows 7 Starter will be very acceptable. A 250GB hard disk drive is standard for netbooks.

The 10.1in (1,024x600 resolution) screen is fine for single productivity applications or videos and the small size allows for the L1350D to weigh a very low 1.1kg. Physically it’s also tiny, 31.5mm thick, 180mm deep and 260mm wide.

In all, one of cheapest entries into computing. Performance won't be anything like that of a proper notebook, but you'll manage to surf the web, do email and run basic productivity applications.

You can't go wrong buying this notebook. It's almost a perfect mix of capability, price and looks. Highly recommended.

Dubbed Oneiric Ocelot, the new Ubuntu 11.10 operating system is the 15th release of the Ubuntu OS and it will be supported for 18 months on both desktops and servers.

Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) brings lots of improvements to the Unity launcher and panel, all on top of the new GNOME 3.2 desktop environment.
