The Samsung N145-JP02AU basic netbook needs fairly serious discounting if it's going to compete head to head with just about any modern netbook.

For $399 the Samsung N145-JP02AU basic netbook is not very good value for money. Netbooks that have Intel Atom N550s sellf for around $350, which means that the N145 has to be dramatically discounted if it has any hope of competing as far as value for money is concerned.

The Intel Atom N450 (1.66 GHz) processor makes it possible to surf the internet, manage spreadsheets, and other simple productivity applications. You’ll only be playing casual games due to the presence of only onboard graphics along with 1GB of RAM, but for a netbook that’s normal.

An unncessary compromise here is a 160GB hard drive, which while sufficient could easily have been a larger 250GB hard drive. No complaints with the 10.1in (1,024x600 resolution) screen though, as it allows for great overall portability while still letting you see what you’re doing. This netbook weighs 1.24kg and measures 264m wide, 188mm deep, and 34.7mm thick.

Samsung NC110-A07

By netbook standards the NC110 is actually fairly powerful, and it looks very sleek as well.

The 10.1in Samsung NC110-A07 is a sleek looking and reasonably powerful netbook for a reasonable price of $329 at ELCOMS. The Intel Atom N570 powering it is currently the fastest netbook processor available, so while not super powerful it still handles productivity applications very well.

In addition to the Intel Atom N570 processor there’s 1GB of RAM, so Windows 7 Starter runs acceptably well. Storage is taken care of by a 250GB hard disk drive, so while not massive it can still hold a decent amount of files if you exercise some restraint.

The 10.1in (1,024x600 resolution) screen is sufficient for general usage. The NC110’s portability is a bit better than average, on account of it weighing 1.18kg versus the 1.3kg that many other netbooks weigh.You can't go wrong buying this notebook. It's almost a perfect mix of capability, price and looks. Highly recommended.

Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830

We were browsing at our usual haunts and were surprised to see the Samsung Galaxy Ace for sale at CMK Cellphones for Php14,700. 

The Galaxy Ace is a very nice low cost Android phone with sports a 3.5-inch 480x320 screen. This is bigger than usual 3.2-inch screen you will find in the lower end Android phones.

The Galaxy Ace runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) and not the latest Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) which will disapoint many. 

Inside is an 800MHz ARM 11 processor and Adreno 200 GPU. The ARM 11 processor means no flash support. 

Internal storage is a scant 158MB but you do get a 2GB MicroSD card with the package. You get all the usual wireless connections. At the back, you get a 5MP auto focus camera with a LED flash.

With its specifications and price, it is set to be a HTC Wildfire/Hero/Legend and Apple iPhone 3GS killer.

Yesterday we found the 3.5-inch Google Android Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 at a retailer for Php14,700. 

Today Techie.com.ph has the scoop (details and specifications at this link) on another budget Samsung Android smartphone, the Galaxy Mini S5570.

With the Galaxy 5 at Php9,190, this one at Php11,500 and the Galaxy Ace at about Php15,000, and the Galaxy 551 for those wanting a physical QWERTY keyboard at Php13,490, it looks like Samsung Philippine has all the bases covered.

Samsung N150-JA02

This basic netbook is more expensive than the alternatives while also having worse overall specs.

For $429 the Samsung N150-JA02 is not a competitively priced netbook. Cheaper nerbooks from other manufacturers have much better specs, and while a discount to the tune of $180 would help the N150 become good value for money again it's still probably better to go with an alternative that has an Intel Atom N550 or AMD Fusion C-50.

What the N150 does have is an Intel Atom N450 (1.66GHz) processor that is reasonable enough for most simpler productivity applications. The 1GB of RAM and onboard graphics are pretty much standard for a netbook, so no complaints there at least.

A 250GB hard drive is small but is up to par with the plethora of otherwise better specced alternatives. The 10.1in (1,024x600 resolution) screen is also up to par, and at least the portability of the N150 is slightly better than average for a netbook. It weighs 1.24kg and measures 34.7mm thick, 188.5mm deep and 264mm wide.

Steve Jobs Was First to Contact Samsung Over Patent Infringement

A key witness in the tablet suit between Apple and Samsung revealed in an Australian court today that former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, was the first to approach the Korea-based electronics maker over possible patent infringements by its products.

According to Dow Jones Newswires, former Apple Inc. Chief Executive Steve Jobs directly contacted Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. last year with concerns that its products infringed on Apple patented inventions.

The disclosure was made by a key witness in the ongoing patent suits between the two companies.

"The discussions started with contact from him, and then he wasn't involved in meetings beyond that," senior Apple executive Richard Lutton told the federal court in Sydney.

Lutton said that Jobs had expressly approached Samsung because he valued the “deep relationship” his company had with the Korean company. According to the Apple executive, Jobs wanted "to give them a chance to do the right thing".

In the meanwhile, the legal spat between Apple and Samsung continues unchanged.

People familiar with the tablet case say that the Cupertino, California-based iPad maker is seeking an injunction against Samsung to prevent its version 10.1 of its Galaxy Tab from reaching the Australian market.

Apple’s lawyers are trying to convince the court that certain features of the Samsung slate computer don’t do justice to the patents Apple holds for its own tablet computers.

However, there has been a recent turn of events. Korean sources are now reporting that Samsung has signed a patent cross-licensing deal with Microsoft, an alliance that may strengthen Samsung’s arguments in court.

According to industry sources cited by The Korea Times, Samsung and Microsoft have agreed to settle a dispute over the use of patented technologies in the Android OS leveraged by Samsung devices.

The move is expected to bolster a fresh start for the duo, enabling them to focus on rivaling Apple.

“The agreement is a pre-emptive move before the iPhone 5 is released on Oct. 4. Samsung will also significantly boost the sale of its tablets and smartphones thanks to the partnership with MS,” said Koo Ja-woo, an analyst at Kyobo Securities.

Samsung Galaxy Mini Coming Soon to Mobilicity

It looks like the low-budget smartphone Samsung Galaxy Mini is about to reach Canadian shores soon via Mobilicity.

The phone has just been spotted by the guys over at MobileSyrup, but no release date or pricing options have been revealed yet.

Apparently, the Galaxy Mini was spotted at a Samsung rock concert in Toronto, inside one of the demo booths, stamped with the “Coming Soon to Mobilicity” tag.

Samsung Galaxy Mini has already been launched on the market in multiple regions, including Europe and United States.

However, the phone is known as Samsung Dart in the U.S. and is available via T-Mobile, whereas in India the phone goes by a different name, as well, Samsung Galaxy Pop.

Although the phone is entry-level smartphone, the Canadian version will be delivered with an improved 3-megapixel camera, instead of the Dart's 2-megapixel photo snapper, which is not available at T-Mobile. 
Furthermore, Samsung Dart is equipped with a low-performance ARM 600MHz processor and runs on Android 2.2 Froyo, with slim chances to be update with a newer Gingerbread version of the operating system.

In addition, the Galaxy Mini features a small 3.14-inch QVGA capacitive touchscreen with 262K colors support, 240 x 320 pixels resolution, accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, TouchWiz v3.0 UI, Swype text input method and proximity sensor for auto turn-off.

Even though it's a low-budget phone, Galaxy mini features HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, along with 160 MB of internal memory and microSD card for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 2GB card included).

Other key features of the smartphone include 3.5 mm audio jack, DNSe sound enhancement, Stereo FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP support, microUSB 2.0, GPS with A-GPS support, as well as Digital compass.

The phone is powered by a standard Li-Ion 1200 mAh battery that should provide up to 570 hours of standby time or up to 9 hours and 30 minutes of talk time.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G Coming Soon to TELUS

Although Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G tablet will reach Canadian shores this summer, the Korean handset manufacturer has yet to announce the exact release date of the device.

However, it appears that TELUS has picked the tablet, as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G is now listed on the carrier's “Coming Soon” webpage, which means that its launch is imminent.

There's no information regarding the tablet's price options yet, but customers who wish to purchase it should know that the Wi-Fi version is going for $499.99.

As the name suggests, the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G features an impressive 10.1-inch touchscreen display with resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels.

This is TELUS’ first 4G tablet and can be purchased with the Tablet Flex Plan, which provides customers with cost certainty and usage flexibility, without unexpected overage fees.

How to Boost Speed Up Your Galaxy S II Usage

Photo of Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S II Emerges

Samsung's Galaxy S II seems set to become the most popular Android-powered mobile phone on the market for the ongoing year, but its lack of presence on the United States market at the moment might not help it at all.

However, it seems that it should not be too long before wireless carriers in the US add it to their offerings as well, although nothing was officially announced on the matter for the time being.

Sprint is one of the operators that will make the handset available on its airwaves soon, and a leaked photo with the same phone, supposedly called Within, is already available for your viewing pleasure.

What the said image brings forth is the phone's back cover, where Samsung's logo can be clearly seen next to Sprint's.

The 8-megapixel photo snapper that can be seen in the image and the texture also come as a confirmation of the fact that we are indeed looking at the Galaxy S II and not another smartphone out there.

The smartphone was rumored to be on its way to the market on Sprint's airwaves as the Galaxy Within, but nothing was confirmed on the matter for the time being.

Apparently, Galaxy S II might be set to land on the market in the US in a matter of days or weeks, and should run under Google's Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread OS flavor right from the start.

Previously, other wireless carriers in the United States were also rumored to be adding the smartphone to their offerings, but not official confirmation on that emerged either.

Galaxy S, the predecessor of this year's flagship Android-based handset, was launched in the United States via all major carriers in the country, and landed at regional operators as well.

Samsung Galaxy Gio Coming to Bell in August

It appears that Bell plans to release one of the Galaxy family mid-range Android smartphones, the Galaxy Gio sometime in August.

Unveiled earlier this year at the 2011 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung Galaxy Gio hit shelves in May.

According to the guys over at MobileSyrup, the handset is en route to Bell and will make its debut in Canada next month.

There is no information regarding the phone's price options, but the latest rumors say that the Galaxy Gio might be picked by Virgin Mobile as well.

Samsung Galaxy Gio will face a fierce competition on Canadian shores, as many Android devices in the same price range are already available on the market, including INQ Cloud Touch, LG Optimus One and HTC Wildfire S.

Although the phone is powered by Google's Android 2.2 (Froyo) platform, multiple unofficial ROMs that allow users to upgrade to Gingerbread are already available in the wild.

Furthermore, the Galaxy Gio is equipped with a single core Qualcomm QCT MSM7227-1 Turbo processor clocked at 800 MHz.

With only 158 MB of internal memory, potential customers should buy an extra microSD memory card, though the phone is delivered with a 2GB memory card in the sales package.

The phone also sports an average 3-megapixel camera with autofocus, geo-tagging, smile detection and video recording capabilities (QVGA@15fps).

The Galaxy Gio comes with a mid-size 3.2-inch multi-touch capacitive display with 16 million colors support and 320 x 480 pixels resolution, as well as accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate and proximity sensor for auto turn-off.

The handset does not feature a secondary front-facing camera for video calls, instead it offers HSDPA (7.2 Mbps) and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, including Wi-Fi hotspot capability.

The phone's standard 1350 mAh Li-Ion battery should provide up to 610 hours (460 hours for 3G) of standby time or up to 11 hours (7 hours for 3G) of talk time.

Samsung Hercules Possibly Arriving at T-Mobile USA on September 26th

Leaked in a recently T-Mobile roadmap, it appears that Samsung Hercules is in line with the release date specified in the document, September 26th.

Yet unannounced, the Samsung Hercules might be in fact a T-Mobile USA branded Galaxy S II, though there are several hardware discrepancies, such as the size of the touchscreen display.

Samsung Hercules received its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certifications from Bluetooth SIG about three weeks ago under a different name, Samsung SGH-T989.

As we mentioned above, unlike the Galaxy S II that comes with a 4.3-inch display, the Samsung Hercules will be delivered with a slightly larger 4.5-inch capacitive multi-touch touchscreen Super AMOLED Plus display with 480 x 800 pixels resolution.

Furthermore, the device is allegedly equipped with an APQ8060 dual-core processor manufactured by Qualcomm and clocked at 1.2GHz speed.

In addition, the phone's processor is complemented by a next-generation Adreno 220 GPU (graphics processing unit).

Although the Samsung Hercules is tagged with category 24 HSDPA (42 Mbps) compatibility and category 6 HSUPA (5.76Mbps), it is unclear whether the handset will be delivered with AWS plus 850 / 1900 MHz compatibility for support on AT&T’s 4G network if the merger between the two carriers is completed.

Samsung Hercules is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread and features NFC support, but for the moment it lacks Isis mobile payment standard which might be included at a later date.

The handset packs 16GB of internal memory, 1GB RAM, as well as microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

It also boasts an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash and 1080 video capture capabilities, as well as secondary front-facing camera for video calls.

According to T-Mobile USA's leaked roadmap, Samsung SGH-T989, also known as Samsung Hercules is expected to be released on September 26th at a price that will be disclosed in due time.

GALAXY Tab 10.1 Coming Soon at Vodafone Australia

Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1, the slim tablet PC that South Korean handset vendor Samsung Electronics unveiled to the world during the CTIA conference in March, is set to arrive on shelves at wireless carrier Vodafone Australia in the near future.

The company already announced plans to make the device available for purchase, but did not offer specific details on when it might be released, nor on the price tag is should sport.

This is the upgraded flavor of Samsung's 10-inch tablet PC, following the release of a version that later became GALAXY Tab 10.1v, and which was already launched in various markets around the world on Vodafone's airwaves.

Unlike the original, the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 comes with a slimmer design, and is also more lightweight.

However, the tablet PC retained the large 10.1-inch touchscreen display that can deliver a WXGA (1280 X 800 pixel) resolution, as well as the fast 1GHz dual-core application processor.

The specifications list of this device also includes support for GSM: 850/900/1800/1900Mhz and HSPA/WCDMA: 850/900/1900/2100 frequencies, as well as WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth: V 3.0 capabilities.

The tablet PC comes with WiFi Hotspot capabilities as well, 2.0 USB, and with 16 GB of internal memory.

Samsung also packed GALAXY Tab 10.1 with a 3-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with LED flash and support for 1280X720 video recording @ 30FPS, as well as with a 2MP camera on the front, for video calling.

Virgin Mobile announced only a few days ago that it would add the handset to its offering as the Galaxy S II 4G, but specific details on the availability of this device and on its pricing were not made official.

However, a recently leaked screenshot of an internal document from the wireless operator seems to have

changed that.

According to the leak, the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G should be released on shelves at the mobile phone carrier on July 14th.

The company seems to have put in place a specific program to see which of its employees will sell the most Galaxy S II smartphones, something that might actually prove to be an easy task.

The handset comes with appealing looks and with impressive hardware packed inside, which should make it a top seller in no time.

What remains to be seen is the cost that it will come with. According to MobileSyrup, the handset might go for $599.95 off contract, while being set to land at SaskTel for only $79.99 on a three-year contract.

With a dual-core application processor packed inside, clocked in at 1.2GHz, the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G will certainly be worth every penny.

To that, we might add the 4.3-inch touchscreen display on the front, along with a camera to enable video calling, and an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back with support for HD video recording.

Android Ice Cream to Come on Samsung Nexus Prime

Before 2011 is over, Google might bring to the market a new Nexus device, one that would run under the upcoming
flavor of the Android mobile operating system, and some more info the this device has just emerged.

Apparently, the same as the latest Nexus, the upcoming device will arrive on the market from Samsung, and should be a 'pure Google' mobile phone.

BGR reports that the mobile phone will arrive on the market with a 720p -resolution display, and that Samsung will call it “Super AMOLED HD.”

Moreover, the upcoming mobile phone should include an OMAP4460 application processor, the same as rumored not too long ago.

At the moment, the new handset goes by the name of Nexus Prime, and there is a great chance that it would arrive on shelves under this name as well, it seems.

One interesting piece of info regarding the upcoming mobile phone is the fact that it should be launched with more wireless carriers.

Previously, Google chose to have the Nexus smartphones available on the market only on the airwaves of one carrier at launch, but Nexus Prime should mark the shift in this approach.

Google is also rumored to be working with more OEMs on the release of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) mobile phones, which could launch at the same time.

This would be similar with Microsoft's approach towards the release of new hardware running under its Windows Phone platform, with new mobile phones being launched as soon as updated OS flavors are available.

What that means for Google, it remains to be seen, though it will certainly be interesting to see new, high-end Android phones being released from various handset vendors at the same time via more than just one wireless carrier out there.

For the time being, however, nothing was confirmed on the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich-based mobile phone, though it might not be too long before it will all be made official, so keep an eye on this space for more.

Samsung's flagship device managed to make a great impression on the South Korean market as well, where it enjoyed great pre-order demand, as well as impressive first three days sales.

Last month, Apple's iPhone 4 held the crown on the smartphone segment in the UK, but it seems that Galaxy S II won't leave it have the first position on the market again.

Based on Google's Android operating system, the Samsung Galaxy S II comes with a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display, complemented by a powerful dual-core 1.2GHz application processor.

All these make it more appealing that Apple's device, which is powered by a single-core CPU and sports only internal memory. However, other features also make the Galaxy S a better option for users than than the iconic device from Apple would do.

The wireless carrier made the new smartphone available for pre-order for its business users not too long ago, and now it has it available for consumers as well.

Samsung's latest flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S II, is as appealing as it can be, but it seems that there might still be people who would consider that some features might be added into the mix.

Thus, a Samsung Galaxy X concept phone emerged, with specifications similar with those of the already available smartphone but with some new features included next to them.

The concept phone, designed by Long-Nong Huang, maintains the looks of Samsung Galaxy S II, so there is not too that one would see there.

On the inside, it would sport similar specs with the official device, including the powerful 1.2GHz dual-core application processor, complemented by 768MB of RAM.
